Autumn Equinox Ritual and remedies

Twice each year, the world pauses in balance. Day and night meet as equals — light and dark holding one another. This brief moment, the Equinox, reminds us that balance is not static but a rhythm.

Just as the trees let go of their leaves, our bodies and hearts are invited to release what no longer serves, so we can root more deeply into what sustains us.

Why Ritual Matters

Rituals are more than symbolic gestures. They cue the nervous system to shift. When we light a candle, breathe intentionally, or write down what we are letting go, our body registers safety. Rituals create containers for release, helping us move through anxiety with gentleness instead of force.

And here’s something important to remember: rituals don’t have to take a long time. A few mindful minutes can be enough to mark the transition, anchor your body, and create space for calm.

A Simple Autumn Ritual to Try

  • Create a small altar. Place a grounding stone, a sprig of an autumn herb, and a scented candle on a cloth or natural surface. (see below for seasonal stones, herbs, and essential oils) This simple act sets the space apart and tells your body: this is a moment of care.

  • Light your candle, sit comfortably quiet and take three 4-7-8 breaths to settle your nervous system.

  • Write on a small piece of paper or fallen leaf one thing your body is ready to release this season — perhaps a worry, a habit, or a heaviness.

  • Release by safely burning the paper or burying it beneath soil, whispering: “I release this so my roots may grow stronger.” (have a water source near by to drop it in)

  • Sip your tea slowly, feeling warmth in your body, take in your surroundings, grounding into the balance of the season.
